Mathematics is a core subject for all students in years 8 to 12.

We aim to equip pupils with the necessary Mathematical skills that they will need when they leave St Joseph’s and enter further education or the world of work.


Students will have opportunities to develop:

  • knowledge and understanding of
    • Number
    • Algebra
    • Shape, Space and Measures
    • Handling Data;
  • knowledge and understanding of personal finance issues;
  • mathematical skills needed for real life and work situations.


All students at St Joseph’s study GCSE Mathematics in Years 11 and 12 at either Foundation or Higher tier. They will follow CCEA specification which is a modular course and the modules are broken down as follows:

T1-T4 are worth 45% of the overall GCSE grade and are taken May/June of Year 11.
T1 covers grades E, F and G
T2 covers Grades C, D and E
T1 and T2 are foundation modules
T3 covers grades B, C and D
T4 covers grades A*, A and B
T3 and T4 are higher modules.

Your teacher will decide the most appropriate module for you to take.

T5 or T6 is taken in May/ June of Year 12 and is worth 55% of the overall grade.
T5 covers grades C, D, E, F and G
T6 covers grades A*, A, B, C and D

Practice questions are vital in GCSE Mathematics and all students will be expected to complete regular homework’s. All students will need to own a scientific calculator.
